What does success look like?

Confidence in math skills is empowering

Often a parent becomes concerned with the struggle they see their child going through with mathematics. Tutoring your own children is a tricky business. Just ask me! It's easier to be tutored by an expert, away from the usual distractions found in the home - like parents, siblings, smartphones, TV, games, pets, snacks ... you name it.

My measure of success is the student experience. Check out the picture that headlines this blog post. My son is in the black teeshirt. His team won a 7s International Rugby tournament that year. That's what success looks like.

I ask each student -

  • What are your goals and aspirations?

  • What do you want to do after you graduate?

  • Are you committed to filling in your gaps in learning?

Then the challenge becomes more tactical. I ask -

  • Can they see their own progress?

  • Are they getting comfortable with mathematics and its many topics?

  • How do they do on quizzes and trial exams?

These are a few of the guidelines I use to gauge how each student is progressing.

As an introduction to me and to Ladybug Tutors, I provide a written assessment to the student's parents of the student's comfort, barriers, and capabilities in their level of mathematics. Then I report on progress after every session by email. I'm responsive to special requests. Contact us!
