The Globe and Mail published several major articles about math this year. It seemed like investigative reporting! No other academic subject received this attention. Why not?

Math is LOGIC! It’s a powerful tool, a discipline that you can apply throughout your life. Math taught me way of looking at my world. Math taught me to think, to reason, and to solve problems … and not just math problems!

The techniques you learn in math follow a process of justification that leads to a deep understanding Cause-and-Effect. This has become a guiding principle in my life. When something unexpected occurs, I ask myself —

What did I do to cause this event - or outcome - to happen?

Math helps me to get clear on the starting point. It helps me deduce B from A and to get to the heart of the argument. Math gave me the capacity to follow a long chain of incidents from an outcome to a clear starting point. It’s powerful!

Math is about more than arithmetic. Having said this, everyone would benefit by knowing their Times Tables! Math is about learning to think and about thinking clearly.
